Clarification: Jacque Maribe Not Appointed as Head of Communication in Public Service Ministry

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has issued a clarification regarding the purported appointment of former TV journalist Jacque Maribe as the Head of Communication in the Public Service Ministry. Contrary to widely circulated reports and speculations, the PSC, in a circular dated Thursday, March 14, stated that no such appointment had been made. The clarification came following a flurry of rumors earlier in the week regarding Maribe’s alleged appointment to the position.

PSC Chairperson Amb. Anthony Muchiri emphasized that neither had the commission made any appointment nor had they received any request to employ Maribe. This clarification aims to set the record straight amidst the confusion and speculations surrounding Maribe’s alleged appointment.

Furthermore, the PSC clarified that the position of Head of Communication in the Public Service Ministry will be filled through a competitive process, as per the standard procedures, should a vacancy arise. This reaffirms the commission’s commitment to transparency and adherence to due process in all appointments within the public service.

Justice Served: Joseph Irungu Condemned to Death for Monica Kimani’s Murder

Joseph Irungu (Jowie), has faced the long arm of justice, receiving a death sentence for the brutal murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani in 2018. The verdict was delivered by High Court judge Grace Nzioka, who characterized the crime as deliberate and premeditated.

Judge Nzioka’s ruling emphasized the intentional nature of the murder, stating unequivocally that it was neither defensive nor provoked but meticulously planned and executed. She highlighted the severe harm inflicted upon the victim using a dangerous weapon and underscored the absence of any mitigating factors such as provocation.

The prosecution, advocating for the ultimate penalty, painted a grim picture of Jowie’s character, labeling him as “criminogenic” with a propensity for violence and instability in relationships. Furthermore, evidence of Jowie’s military training and aggressive behavior lent credence to the prosecution’s case.

The repercussions of Monica Kimani’s murder extended far beyond her immediate family, affecting society as a whole. The collapse of the family business in South Sudan, which she managed, compounded the tragedy, leading to financial ruin and emotional distress for her loved ones.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry has tendered his resignation in a move that marks a significant shift in Haiti’s tumultuous political landscape. This decision comes in the wake of protracted unrest and spiraling violence that has gripped the Caribbean nation, leading to a security crisis of unprecedented proportions.

Henry’s resignation was triggered by a crucial meeting of regional leaders in Jamaica, where discussions centered on Haiti’s political future. The outcome was a consensus on the need for a transitional presidential council, a development confirmed by Guyana’s President and current Caribbean Chairman, Irfaan Ali. The council’s establishment and appointment of an interim prime minister signal a new chapter for Haiti as it navigates through these challenging times.

Since taking on the unelected position in 2021 after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, Henry has led the country through a period marked by turmoil and instability. His tenure has been marred by escalating violence, particularly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where gangs have exerted increasing pressure, culminating in calls for his resignation.

The security situation reached a critical point when Henry found himself stranded outside Haiti, in Puerto Rico, effectively locked out of his own country. This international isolation occurred shortly after he visited Kenya, where he secured a deal to deploy 1,000 Kenyan police officers. This agreement, part of a multinational security mission sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council, aimed to restore order and combat the rampant gang activity that has paralyzed Haiti.

The resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry is not just the conclusion of his tenure but also a poignant reminder of the deep-seated issues plaguing Haiti. The nation’s history of political instability, economic hardship, and natural disasters has created a fertile ground for the current crisis. As the international community watches closely, the formation of the transitional council offers a glimmer of hope for stability and the restoration of peace in Haiti.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unequivocally dismissed rumors suggesting that President William Ruto intends to replace him as his running mate in the 2027 elections. Speaking during an International Women’s Day event in Embu on Friday, March 8, Gachagua clarified that Ruto’s remarks had been misinterpreted.

Gachagua emphasized that Ruto’s statement regarding gender balance in future political partnerships did not imply an imminent change in their alliance. Instead, he explained that Ruto’s reference to a male-female duo pertained to the next leadership phase beyond their current tenure.

“The president said he would talk to me to plan the future once we finish our time. So, some were thinking it’s immediately. Therefore, you must wait first I help the president during his term; when the time comes to finish, the president himself will lead us and show us how to organize these women and their affairs in order,” Gachagua clarified.

These remarks by Gachagua followed closely on the heels of Ruto’s suggestion that his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party would consider nominating a female candidate for the presidential running mate position in upcoming elections. Gachagua’s reassurance underscores his confidence in the enduring partnership between him and Ruto, as well as their shared commitment to realizing their vision for the nation.

Government Mandates Exclusive Advertising on KBC: Reviving State-owned Broadcaster

In a bid to revive the struggling State-owned broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), the government has issued a directive mandating all government agencies, independent commissions, and public universities to air their TV and radio advertisements through KBC exclusively.

The announcement was made by Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani, the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications, on Friday. This directive, according to Prof. Kisiang’ani, aligns with a Treasury circular issued on July 10, 2015, which communicated the Cabinet’s decision to centralize public sector advertising.

“All public sector electronic (radio and television) advertisements from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) falling under the National Government, Independent Commissions, and Public Universities shall be handled by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) upon authorization by the Government Advertising Agency (GM),” Prof. Kisiang’ani stated in a circular to all Ministries.

One of the primary objectives behind this directive is to ensure timely payment for advertising services, thereby preventing any accumulation of debt owed to media houses. Prof. Kisiang’ani emphasized the importance of aligning these strategies with the government’s policy of revitalizing ailing public sector entities and ensuring equitable treatment in public-private partnerships.

“This strategic move not only serves to bolster KBC but also allows the government to leverage its resources effectively, utilizing its own institutions to reach target audiences,” Prof. Kisiang’ani added.

The decision underscores a broader effort to address the financial challenges faced by KBC while simultaneously streamlining government advertising processes. By consolidating advertising efforts through KBC, the government aims to optimize its communication channels, enhance transparency, and support the revival of state-owned media.

Ruto Pledges Gender Balance: UDA Vows to Field Female Running Mate

President William Ruto has made a groundbreaking commitment to promote gender equality within his party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), by ensuring that a female candidate will serve as the deputy president in future elections. This announcement comes as part of Ruto’s efforts to lead the charge in supporting women and advancing the two-thirds gender rule in Kenya.

During the launch of the G7 Council of Women Governors Caucus Strategy event at Safari Park, Ruto emphasized the importance of gender balance in political leadership. He asserted that discussions with his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, will prioritize the inclusion of women in key leadership positions within the party.

Ruto’s proposal stipulates that if a man is chosen as the presidential candidate for UDA, a woman must be selected as the running mate, and vice versa. This strategic decision aims to ensure that gender parity is achieved at the highest levels of governance, both nationally and within the counties.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of women in leadership, Ruto emphasized the need for intentional and deliberate efforts to empower women in politics. He highlighted the appointment of Embu Governor Cicily Mbarire as the chair of UDA as a deliberate move towards gender inclusivity within the party’s leadership structure.

Furthermore, Ruto called for bipartisan support from all political leaders to champion the cause of women in leadership. He underscored the importance of solidarity among party leaders in endorsing and supporting women candidates in electoral contests.

The G7 Council, comprising seven elected women governors, aims to empower and support women leaders in demonstrating effective governance within the devolved structures of Kenya. The caucus represents a significant step towards gender mainstreaming in political leadership.

Ruto’s commitment to gender balance aligns with his recent advocacy for increased representation of women in political leadership positions. With only seven women governors currently in office, Ruto’s pledge signals a transformative shift towards greater gender parity in Kenya’s political landscape.

As Kenya prepares for future elections, Ruto’s vow to prioritize gender inclusivity within UDA sets a powerful precedent for political parties nationwide. By championing women’s representation in leadership, Ruto seeks to pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive political environment in Kenya.
